The IGP Okoth Ochola is expected to hand over office after the expiry of his contract. Ochola was appointed as the police chief in March, 2018, to replace his then boss, Gen Kale Kayihura.
As the expiration date of the three-year contract approaches, Uganda's Inspector General of Police (IGP), Martin Okoth Ochola, is set to hand over his office in a ceremony at the police headquarters in Naguru later today. Sources reveal that President Museveni, who previously extended Ochola's term, would have preferred to retain him, but Ochola has decided to step down.
While the president may have wished to keep him, it appears that Ochola has chosen to retire from his position in the force. Despite recent warnings against lobbying for the IGP role, Ochola's successor awaits appointment by President Museveni.
Ochola, a seasoned police officer with three decades of experience, has ascended through the ranks to become the head of the force. Born in 1958 in Agumiti village, Tororo District, he began his education at Abweli Primary School before moving on to Rock View Primary School and Kisoko Boys Primary School. Later, he attended Namilyango College for his high school diploma and pursued higher education at Makerere University, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1983. The following year, he obtained a postgraduate diploma in legal practice from the Law Development Centre.Ugandans are now waiting to see who the new police boss would be.
